For a small country town Blackwater certainly has a huge claim to fame – being the coal capital of Queensland. Like many rural areas, there is usually one major industry that is the lifeblood of the community. For Blackwater that industry is mining with the town being surrounded by six open cut mines supplying most of the town’s employment. If you’re in Blackwater for work or just a casual visitor then you’re probably going to need a car to get around in, Budget Car Hire have got you covered.

One interesting feature of Blackwater is the 37 flag display at Lion’s Park west of the town along the Capricorn Highway. It is apparently one of the largest flag displays in the world, paying homage to all the different nationalities that work in the Blackwater mines. Although some children (and adults) might find it a tedious challenge, it might be a fun idea to suggest your kids try and identify each country’s flag if you’ve stopped here for a break.
If you’re wanting to get out of Blackwater and its immediate surrounds for a few days then take a drive to Blackdown Tableland National Park where you can camp, hike or just have a picnic. The National Park is about an hour’s drive east from Blackwater and features unique flora and fauna that you can see from any of the breathtaking scenic lookouts or extensive walking tracks set against a backdrop of sheer sandstone cliffs.
Budget Car Hire Blackwater have a handy location on Railway Street, just off the Capricorn HIghway in central Blackwater.
