The Sydney suburb of Parramatta is located around 23 west of the New South Wales capital and is the oldest European inland settlement in Australia. The city is an important commercial and business hub with several major agencies setting up headquarters in the area as well as one of the biggest shopping precincts in the country. Due to it’s close proximity to the Sydney CBD the suburb is well serviced by public transport with ferries, buses and trains although the best way by far to navigate around the area is by car. Things to see and do

With Parramatta being such an important historic city the area is full of colonial era buildings and heritage sites. Old Government House is located in Parramatta Park and these days is a museum, the building site is currently Australia’s oldest standing public building. Other historic buildings in the suburb include Experiment Farm Cottage, Lennox Bridge, St John’s Cathedral and Parramatta Gaol. While the enticement of great dining, shopping and the short drive to Sydney’s CBD is a huge draw it’s always nice to stop and admire some of the heritage of yesteryear that can be found in places like Parramatta.

If you’re in Parramatta and consider yourself a bit of a sports fan then think about catching a home game of the Parramatta Eels. Although the NRL team haven’t had the best of luck over the last few seasons it’s still an exhilarating experience to watch Australia’s favourite game.
